By the action of water on calcium carbide, purified of impurities like ammonia, phosphine, hydrogen sulphide, and arsinated hydrogen, dried and finally dissolved in acetone stored in cylinders.
Safety
Very flammable (in pure from), dangerous fire risk, burns with intense hot flame; explosive limits in air 2.5-80%. Forms explosive compounds with silver, mercury and copper, which should be excluded from contact with acetylene in transmission systems. Copper alloys maybe used with caution. Piping should be electrically bonded and grounded.
